AES Consulting Engineers is seeking a full-time Jr. Survey Party Chief for our Chesapeake office. Candidates for this position will be responsible for performing and leading technical field surveying duties for various land development projects. Working under the supervision of a Survey Manager or Senior Party Chief, this role involves the accurate collection of field data, interpretation of survey plans, and the day-to-day operation and maintenance of advanced surveying equipment.
Responsibilities:
- Set up, operate, and maintain advanced surveying equipment.
- Perform various types of field surveys, including but not limited to: construction staking, topographic surveys, boundary surveys, control network establishment, as-built surveys.
- Conduct field calculations and checks to ensure the accuracy and completeness of collected data.
- Interpret engineering plans, specifications, and previous survey records to determine project requirements.
- Prepare detailed, accurate, and legible field notes, sketches, and digital logs.
- Import, export, and manage field data files and project documents.
- Ability to work independently on smaller projects or lead a small survey crew on routine assignments.
- Provide on-the-job training and mentorship to junior crew members.
- Ensure the crew maintains an efficient pace to meet project timelines and schedules.
- Communicate daily work plans, objectives, and any field issues to supervisor.
Qualifications:
- Proficiency in setting up and operating modern survey equipment (GPS, Robotic Total Stations, etc.).
- Strong knowledge of basic surveying principles, methods, and computations.
- Basic proficiency with survey data software and/or CAD software (Trimble Business Center, AutoCAD Civil 3D) is a plus.
- Ability to work outdoors year-round in a variety of field conditions and terrain.
Required: Candidate will have 2-4+ years of progressive experience in land surveying, typically transitioning from a Survey Technician or Instrument Operator role. High School diploma or equivalent required. Must possess a valid Virginia Driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
Preferred: Candidate will process field data using AutoCAD Civil 3D, have strong math skills, be reliable, detail-oriented and possess a willingness to team and learn. An associate’s degree or technical certification in Surveying, Geomatics, or a related field is preferred.
